The Making of a One-of-a-Kind Fancy Color Rainbow Flower Ring

People always ask me what it actually takes to put together a piece like this. When you see the finished ring, it’s easy to focus on the diamonds themselves, but you’re only seeing the end of the story. You don't see the months we spent hunting down individual stones, turning away great diamonds because they didn't match, or trying to figure out how to physically assemble the setting.

This wasn't a project we knocked out in a few weeks. From the first idea to the final polish, it took months. I told myself right from the start: if we couldn't find the exact natural diamonds needed to make this piece look completely seamless, we just wouldn't make it.

The Idea

I’ve always had a soft spot for natural fancy colored diamonds. What makes them fun to work with is that every single one has its own personality—no two have the exact same color saturation or tone. I wanted to build a flower ring using only natural colored diamonds, but instead of loud, aggressive colors, I wanted soft pastel shades that naturally blended into each other.

Flower designs are classic, but when you do it with rare colored diamonds, it turns into something genuinely special. The goal was to build something you could wear today, but that would still look incredible fifty years down the line.

Hunting Down Seven Diamonds

Finding seven natural colored diamonds that work together in one ring is a massive pain. They don't make these in a factory—you have to hunt them down one by one across the globe.

For the petals, every pear shape needed the right length-to-width ratio so the flower sat flat and looked balanced. I looked at dozens of certified stones over several months. A lot of them were fantastic diamonds on their own, but if the shade or proportions didn't fit the rest of the group, I had to pass on them.

The Blue Diamond

The Fancy Light Blue pear gave me the most trouble. Natural blue diamonds are incredibly rare as it is, so finding one that had clean proportions and the exact soft pastel shade to complement the other petals took a really long time. But holding out for the right stone made all the difference.

Making the Ring

Once we finally had all seven GIA-certified diamonds on the desk, we took them to our jewelers right here in New York City.

Because every natural diamond has a slightly different cut and depth, you can't use pre-made settings. Every single basket had to be custom-made by hand for that specific stone. We tweaked the angle of every petal over and over so the flower caught light from all sides without sitting too high on the finger.

We also lined the edges with natural pink melee diamonds. Finding those tiny pink diamonds in the exact same soft shade took extra time, but it outlines each petal so the shapes stay distinct. Then we added white brilliant-cut diamonds along the split band to give it frame and contrast.

One of One

People ask if we can remake this exact ring for them. The short answer is no.

We can definitely build other flower rings, but this exact combination of seven GIA-certified natural colored diamonds is impossible to duplicate. Nature only made these exact colors and weights once. That’s what makes collecting natural fancy colored diamonds so special—whoever ends up with this ring owns the only one that will ever exist.
